EXISTENTIAL
The
Frame
Existential Philosophy is a manner
of subjectively examining one’s
world-view by exploring one’s freedom, choices, mortality, meaning and other tenets in order to appropriate a stance towards life that enables one to
courageously live it alongside its
grind.
DEATH
An ontological reality. Being is in essence the time that we negotiate. We are mortal beings.
MEANING
We are meaning making beings. We tend to objectify ourselves i.e. reduce everything into an explanatory framework and cause, even when sometimes there are none. Meaning is never absolute, it is dynamic and evolving. Existential therapy attempts to open out these construed meanings.
BEING-WITH
Human beings cannot exist in isolation. We are always Being-with others in this world. Relationality is constitutive of Being.
CHOICES
As we live, we will encounter choices. There are no guarantees, but choose, we unequivocally must. Not choosing is also a choice.
MOOD
The world is disclosed to us through moods or attunement.
FREEDOM
Human beings are free and it is a ubiquitous aspect of experiencing. It however comes with responsibility & consequences. This gaze at freedom is unnerving for some as it exposes them to anxiety hence they abdicate the notion of freedom and construe their situatedness in the world as stuck.
THE EXISTENTIAL ENTERPRISE IS A RESOLUTE INVOCATION OF ONE’S ATTENTIVENESS TOWARDS ONE’S OWN POTENTIAL, CAPACITY AND POSSIBILITIES WITHIN THE CONSTRAINTS OF TIME (MORTALITY).
Such a reflective invocation is necessary as we live a life bound by constrictions imposed upon us by others which we embrace and succumb to.
Well-anchored values in life allows us to conceive goal-directedness and a sense of purpose to constitute meaning in the ‘nothingness’ of life.
Values offer us ground & context to build the edifice. These values however are not unalterable codes or rigid standards.
As circumstances change, it is possible to reconstitute values, intention, desire and choice that may lead one on to a new journey.
EXISTENTIAL PSYCHOTHERAPY FACILITATES ONE IN EXPLORING THIS PATHWAY OF AUTHENTICITY BY MAKING ONE RE-INSPECT THE SELF-CONSTRUCTED BARRICADES AND SELF-DECEIT PRACTICED THAT STEMS FROM A DIMINISHED WORLD-VIEW.
CONSEQUENCE OF TIME IN OUR BEING
Temporal structures of experience
People regard time as substantive, a thing that is thought of as a resource that gets depleted but in essence ‘Being is Time’, the time that we negotiate in our life through experiences. It is Being that is getting depleted and it will end with our finitude (death) with no assurance about its longevity. ‘What does it mean to be in Time’ is a philosophical inquest and of immense significance in therapy. Temporality is the right ontological view of time. The word ecstasis means ‘standing out’, it means to stand out in order to focus upon the present, the past or the future and this movement is called temporality. Temporal flow, is conspicuously experienced in depression and boredom where time seems to stand still. Clock time hasn’t changed but experiential time for the depressed Being stands still. The ability to construct a future, or build hope are also aspects of the ‘future temporal ecstasis’ of human being.
“Everything that now exists, no matter how great and good it is, lasts for a time, fulfills a purpose, and then passes on. And so it will be with all the works of art that now exist; an eternal veil of forgetfulness will lie over them, just as there is now over those things that came before.”
- Adalbert Stifter, Indian Summer

END OF POSSIBILITIES
Our awareness about death happens through the anxiety that we experience after someone else passes away and our own fragility of existence invoked by aging and functional attenuation of the body. Each of these instances remind us that our Being is Time, the time that we negotiate in this life, the only irretrievable resource
DEATH IS AN EXISTENTIAL CONCERN BUT IT IS THE HORIZON, USING WHICH, WE DETERMINE OUR EXISTENCE AND SITUATEDNESS IN LIFE.
BEING-TOWARD
being towards death is in a way being towards life

the actions we commit to

EXISTENTIAL COACHING
coaching
from an existential lens
Our apperceptive coaching deck opens out the relevance of various existential themes and our client's situatedness in his/her life with respect to conflicts, paradoxes, relationship with others, desires, being victims to circumstances, stuckness, amongst others.
APPERCEPTION
To accomplish any desire, one cannot simply hurl oneself over with spirit and gusto. These, along with spontaneity and intent are ingredients but if the desire is a life changing one, it needs a plan and manner of execution starting with its navigation through the maze in one's own mind.
HEADSTRIDE COACHING ENVELOPS THE APPERCEPTIVE FRAMEWORK THAT IS A HARVEST OUT OF EXISTENTIAL, COGNITIVE & PSYCHODYNAMIC SOW.
