ATTENTION IS A PRE-REQUISITE FOR ACCOMPLISHMENT.

 

ATTENTION IS ALSO A PRECONDITION TO LIVING, ONE CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT ATTENDING TO SOMETHING YET WE MAY STRUGGLE TO DEFINE OR EXPLAIN WHAT IS ATTENTION. 

SOME ARE ABLE TO ALLOCATE ATTENTION TO ANYTHING THAT THEY COMMIT & SOME JUST CANNOT? 

ATTENTION

Our engagement with the world is through our consciousness. Attention is an important aspect of our consciousness.  Attention is consciousness directed to the object. Our minds are deeply entrenched into the spontaneity of day to day living. It is diffused, dispersed and we are unable to prioritise or differentiate between the urgent, important and the binding. It needs to remain unfluctuating and ought to be steadied in order to be productive, accomplish anything or simply ‘be’ as in a state of well-being.

RETENTION

We are not attention deficit rather are attention affluent. We are over-stimulated with impinging content daily and our attention moves rapidly from one object of interest to the next. Retention i.e. continued possession of something, in this context ‘attention’, on a particular object, task or thought, and for a substantive time, is lacking. Amidst innumerable thoughts that occur each day, there are negative and repetitive thoughts which erode attention and these thoughts needs some form of regulation, sanitisation or outright erasure.

SUSPENSION

Meditation in a way is a kind of suspension, a withdrawal/erasure from objects/thoughts and re-directing attention on the self. It is an intentional doing to focus inwards in order to heighten concentration, poise and calmness. Mindfulness is a type of meditation, a focus on being in the present. Mindfulness is calling attention to your thoughts, a kind of deep visceral, intentional engrossment towards the object of our engagement be it enjoying a park, conversing, painting, having a cup of tea or jogging.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY,

NOT TO OTHERS BUT TO OWN SELF

‘CALL ATTENTION TO’ IS A MINDFULNESS BASED APPERCEPTIVE PROGRAM THAT OPENS OUT ASPECTS OF ATTENTION, INTERPRETATION AND COMMUNICATION WHICH HAS SUCH A WEIGHTY SIGNIFICANCE IN LIFE. 

Human minds, constantly seek reason and explanation for everything, the cause and effect phenomenon. We seek organization, an explanatory framework and it is how we make sense of the world. It is a default program we are born with. For thinking to transition from idea to idea, it needs reason (the leveller, the catalyst, the binder). While thinking can be a conscious or unconscious process, reasoning is a conscious process. All human beings have a capacity for thought but not all human beings can reason well. Reason needs logic to make meaning and meaning making alters emotion.

REASON, EMOTION & DISTRESS

Thinking doesn’t produce emotional upheaval or distress, reasoning does. The interplay between reason and emotion is important as it helps us make decisions and create excitation.  Constant meaning making and emotional churn can also create agitation and deprive us of calm reflection by ambushing our attention. Plato described emotion and reason as two horses pulling us in opposite directions.

MINDFULNESS IS A WAY OF BEING WHERE REASONING AND MEANING MAKING IS CHANNELISED, EMOTION IS REGULATED AND ONE CALLS ATTENTION TO PRECISELY THAT

WHICH ONE INTENTIONALLY WANTS TO CALL ATTENTION TO.

We have spent time in the classroom, afforded attention and then drifted. We have listened to people at social events and strayed in attentiveness. We have driven through breath-taking scenery, remained focused on our internal dialogue and missed its magnificence. We may even have spent decades in a relationship without being attentive to each other. Hundreds of hours of dispossession of attention starkly portrays our engagement with self and others. The lost gaps are irreconcilable such is the human fallibility but how about repossessing attention?

Mindfulness is the state of being totally conscious, aware, attentive and being sentient by deliberately focusing awareness on the present moment and calmly acknowledging one’s feelings, thoughts, responsiveness and bodily sensations. Instead of the accelerated gallop induced by life’s tasks, one awakens to experience. Mindfulness is a Buddhist conception and few of its therapeutic effects are reducing impulsivity, impairing memory temporarily to experience the now and distraction from worries with sustained attention. Mindfulness is not just about relaxing; it is a way of being, remaining present, the art of consciously observing the world around you.
