Working through depression
At Headstride, we apprehend these mental health complexities and present two applicative workshops:
'THE ANXIOUS BEING' & 'RECLAIMING STATE'
that aims to make people reflect upon Anxiety & Depression,
its implications in one’s existence and get a handle on it.
The prevalence of Anxiety & Depression
In 2018-19, 15.4 million working days lost in the UK due to work related stress, anxiety or depression
In 2017 about 160 million worldwide suffered major depressive disorder
About 8 million people in Britain suffer anxiety disorders and it costs the country £10 billion a year.
About 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. 4 to 10 % people in the UK suffer depression.
50 % of all people diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with anxiety disorder.
These figures are staggering and the Anxiety-Depression co-morbidity is causing serious problems both in the community and at the workplace. From a philosophical standpoint we understand that anxiety cannot be eliminated from our existence and as one kind of anxiety is assuaged, another one will surface however its incapacitating aspect can be controlled after a specific kind of attitude to life is embraced. In these days of economic belt-tightening, manpower trimming, business disruptions, threat of redundancies and overall employment uncertainties, people remain enslaved to their job, excessively stretch themselves and plough through as their sense of well-being, financial sustenance and identity seems to be locked with the job. This is bound to create high stress and hypervigilance. The driven lot, attempt to mask their anxiety and intensify their toil. A few others are unable to manage it and over time lose hope and plunge into despair or even depression.
WHAT IS THE DEPRESSED STATE ABOUT?
People therefore construe depression as a happening (something that has befallen them) as against the possibility of viewing it as
ONE'S SITUATEDNESS TO THEIR THROWNNESS
IN WHICH THEY HAVE CREATED MEANINGS
THE WORK OF THERAPY IS TO DELINEATE THESE MEANINGS
A 1-DAY WORKSHOP
The program offers 6 CPD hrs.
A Phenomenological approach
The onset of depression alters experience significantly. That which was meaningful, worthwhile and engaging, doesn’t make sense anymore. There is an estrangement with the world resulting in loss of state and one plunges into the depths of despair, the constituents of which could be frustration, shame, helplessness, loneliness, or guilt.
The program is about regaining one’s state by understanding depression, its chronicity, its recurrence, its implications and its mending route. Towards this charter, we will contrast the views of Cognitive, Psychodynamic, Psychological, Existential and other complimentary therapies who have respective pathways into and out of depression.

Loss of any kind (life as we knew it), triggers grief but some are unable to reconcile with the loss and descend into depression. Not everyone responds in this fashion though. Some, despite the devastating and cataclysmic events in their life, latch on to hope and with unconditional faith, persevere.
AT HEADSTRIDE, WE INTEND TO EXPLORE THE PHENOMENOLOGY OF HOPE, DRIVE, MOOD, SELF, AFFECT, EMOTION, ACTION, FREEDOM, TIME, FREE WILL AND OTHER ELEMENTS IN ORDER TO
UNDERSTAND DEPRESSION AND FIND A WAY THROUGH.
The program framework is not a biased presupposition or a formulaic template to unfurl a uni-dimensional aspect of depression, it is a credible posturing aimed towards opening out the discussions. We do this by examining Existential, Psychodynamic, Cognitive and Neurobiological representations of depression and by subjecting these concepts to rigorous scrutiny through wide-ranging arguments, theoretical confrontations, clinical applicability and critical examination.
